Research Portal for Descendants of the Slaves of the Cape Colony 1652 - 1900
Cape Colony Marriages 1737 - 1780
The contents of this register date from roughly three generations (60 years) after the first major slave imports to the Cape Colony. It provides clear evidence of both the rotation of female partners in marriage, and continued interracial relationships.
At some time in the past entries in this register have been annotated with crosses in the margin to denote that either one, or both parties to the marriage are of Creole descent. It is highly probable that the markings were used to categorize people according to the racial groups defined by the Apartheid regime.
I have retained the original spelling of names and surnames.
